Blog post 3: How changes in technology impact on the way humans communicate, and the ethical issues that surround these changes
Technology is changing every day to constantly meet the needs of consumers and I believe that this technology has an impact on the way humans communicate. There are many negative and positive impacts that technological changes have on our everyday life. However, I believe that many ethical issues must be considered regarding these changes.
Technology can have potential harm to one’s social life or enhance social skills and social life. Harankhedkar (2018) states that one of the main negative impacts that technology has on communication is it impacts essential interpersonal skills. This is due to the increased frequency of communication through text and chatting websites rather than face to face communication. Another negative impact is the effects that technology can have on someone's mental health as Brown (2018), states that “Two studies involving more than 700 students found that depressive symptoms, such as low mood and feelings of worthlessness and hopelessness, were linked to the quality of online interactions.” There are many reasons as to why depression is linked to social media including cyberbullying (Brown, 2018). This is an ethical issue that impacts the lives of many young teenagers every year. I believe that due to these impacts of technology on communication there needs to be more done to reduce the amount of cyberbullying and depression among young people.
However, there are many positive changes that technology and social media has on the ways humans connect. One of these is that they bring people closer together, it allows people to communicate with people on the other side of the world in a matter of seconds (Harankhedkar, 2018).
The ever-changing development of technology has positively impacted the way individuals can communicate as they can talk to loved ones with the click of a button. However, it is important to understand the implications that technology has and to understand the ethical issues that are related to technology to minimize harm and reduce the dangerous risks that the changes of technology have on communication.
