Blog Post 1: Can you convince a diverse group of educators that online games are fun, but there are so many more benefits too

Driving question: Can you convince a diverse group of educators that online games are fun,
but there are so many more benefits too.

I believe that if educators are able to implement online games into their lesson plans and classroom activities it can be exceptionally beneficial. Although online games have negative implications affiliated with them I believe that online games can be extremely beneficial for a child’s learning and development. There are many benefits that online games have in the classroom for example they promote individual learning and they improve engagement with learning material (Dogra, 2019).

Enhanced individual learning is able to be achieved through online games as differentiation occurs, because all students are at different levels and have different styles of learning. Having online games in the classroom makes it easier for teachers to differentiate classwork to allow for cater for the different needs for the students (Help Teaching, 2017). Students are able to learn through their own style at their own pace through online games. Students can revisit material more than once in ways that assist their learning needs, for example auditory learners can listen to prompts and visual learners are able to revisit videos (Dogra, 2019). Teachers can set up the online games to allow for students to play based on individual needs (Help Teaching, 2017).

Another benefit for online games is they improve engagement with learning material as they make learning fun and enjoyable. Online games can spark interest in a student when providing examples of different concepts (Help Teaching, 2017). For example using maths and logic to run a pizzeria or learning about space whilst flying around on a spaceship (Help Teaching, 2017). Not only does this allow for engagement in learning material and participation they are also enjoying learning and having fun (Dogra, 2019).

I believe that online games are very beneficial to have in the classroom as well as outside of the classroom, as it caters to different needs of learners. Having online games are a fun way to engage students in their learning.
